Welcome to The Write Spot

You're in the Write Spot...join me on this journey to learn how to hone your craft. Whether you're just starting out, or you're a seasoned writer venturing out into new fields of the written word. There's something for everyone.

But first, an introduction to me!

In 1996 I came to Australia and began playing around with the idea of writing as soon as I could understand English. When I was 12, my English teacher encouraged me to submit some work to a writing competition. I won first place in the City of Greater Dandenong Young Writers competition which was a paid prize. So, on paper, I was a professional writer! I kept challenging myself but mostly writing for fun. In year 12, at a career planning day my English teacher told me that I didn’t have what it takes to write professionally. (I know, I’ve had many a grievance about this woman!) So, I put it on the back burner. A few years on, my best friend was helping me redecorate and found a very rough draft of an idea I had and practically forced me to write it. With a lot of encouragement, blood, sweat and tears (also wine, there was much wine) I’d completed the first draft of Ace of Hart by my twenty-fifth birthday.

A year later I’d signed my first publishing deal, six books on and several bestsellers later, I’m still writing, still loving every second of it and most importantly, sharing that passion with others! (Can you tell I'd spent the morning crying! Happy tears I promise).

Now education you ask, because of course you want to know you’re listening to someone who actually knows what they’re talking about right? Well, due to some unfortunate events during the final year of high school, I didn’t go on to uni immediately. I did a quick writing course at TAFE just for my own curiosity and then ignored writing for the next few years while I managed my mental health. In 2019 I took the plunge and went back to school. I completed my Graduate Certificate in Writing and Literature at Deakin and I’m now doing my dual master’s in arts (Literature and a Research Degree) with the hopes of moving on to my PhD.

But of course, writing like everything, can only be taught on a basic level. Everything else has to come from within. The soul, the essence of the craft. The passion, the drive and the love.

Through these mini crash-courses, I hope to share some of the passion and joy that writing has brought to me, unpack some of the ways in which I’ve found clarity and hopefully give you some guidance on your writing journey whatever it may be!

Thanks for coming along and I hope you enjoy the adventure we're about to embark on together.
